This page contains an annotated reading list of books related to Instructional Design, Educational Theory, or Multimedia. Some of these resources were used during classes at UCF; others are additional resources read outside of the classroom.

Instructional Design Resources
     The Systematic Design of Instruction Textbook
Dick, Walter, Carey, Lou, & Carey, James O. (2009). The Systematic Design of Instruction. (7th ed.).      Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson.

A great reference that contains foundational information regarding Instructional Design. Content covers all phases of the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The end of each chapter provides opportunities for the reader to apply the content to a 'real world' scenario that might be encountered in the industry.

Educational Theory Resources
EdPsych Textbook
Bohlin, Lisa, Durwin, Cheryl Cisero, & Reese-Weber, Marla. (2012). EdPsych Modules. (2nd ed.). Boston, MA: McGraw Hill.

Textbook resource that includes content in learner and educational theory, motivation, and cognitive theory; the end of the book includes the practical application of the content toward situations such as differentiated learning and difficult classroom scenarios. Case studies are provided at the beginning of each unit. This text has a K-12 focus.

How to Design and Evaluate Research in Education
Fraenkel, Jack R., Wallen, Norman E., & Hyun, Helen H. (2012). How to Design and Evaluate Research in Education. (8th ed.) New York, NY: McGraw Hill.

A comprehensive textbook regarding research in education. Content begins by discussing the process of identifying a research problem, then moves on to data analysis, research methodologies, with a culminating chapter about writing research proposals and reports. Research exercises, as well as real life research studies, are included throughout the textbook.

Assessment is Essential Textbook
Green, Susan K, & Johnson, Robert L. (2010). Assessment is Essential. (1st ed.) New York, NY: McGraw Hill.

This textbook is designed to help current teachers and education college majors design and develop classroom assessments. While this text has a K-12 focus, many of its chapters contain content which may be applied to adult learners.

Learning Theories Textbook
Schunk, Dale H. (2012). Learning Theories: An Educational Perspective. (6th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson.

This textbook first provides an overview of psysiologial learning processes - what happens in your brain and the rest of your body when an person is learning. The bulk of the remaining chapters outline various learning theories and address the roots of motivation.

Technology and Media Resources
Instructional Technology and Media for Learning
Smaldino, Sharon E., Lowther, Deborah L., & Russell, James D. (2012). Instructional Technology and Media for Learning. (10th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson.

A solid resource that provides a basic overview of instructional media and technology. Introduces readers to the ASSURE model of selecting, utilizing, and evaluating media in instructional situations.

The Non-Designer's Web Book
Williams, R., & Tollett, J. (2006). The Non-Designer's Web Book. (3rd ed.). Berkeley, CA: Peachpit Press.

A great resource for those new to basic web design. Contains design elements to consider when designing a website's layout, color scheme, font selection, and overall aesthetic look. Does not contain a lot of highly technical information regarding html; this book is for novice web designers.
