Research shows that by incorporating properly designed multimedia in instruction, instructors can significantly enhance student learning. This page discusses key multimedia principles covered in Instructional Technology and Media for Learning (Smaldino, Lowther and Russell, 2008), as well as, Richard E. Mayer's cognitive theory of multimedia. You will read about ways to effectively design and implement multimedia in learning, particularly when working with adult learners.

To understand how the brain deals with multimedia and how instructors can leverage this knowledge, refer to , Understanding Multimedia Learning: Integrating multimedia in the K-12 classroom, a white paper based on research conducted by SEG Research, supported by a grant from BrainPOP.
