In the hunger study conducted by Second Harvest Food Bank last year, 74% of clients fell at or below the Federal poverty line. According to research conducted by the American Diabetes Association there is a positive correlation between poverty and poor health outcomes, which include obesity and diabetes. Those who live in poverty are also more likely to develop hypertension or cardiovascular disease. As often as possible it is important to help offer clients nutritious options that will protect this vulnerable population from poor health outcomes. This is where CHOP™ comes in. CHOP™ stands for Choose Healthy Options Program and it was developed by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The activities and information on this website are designed to equip community partners to effectively implement CHOP™ for their clients. |
